With or without a backrest, adjustable, with armrests: which bar stool should you choose?

The main difference between a chair and a bar stool is the presence of a backrest. A bar stool with a backrest is similar to a high bar chair: it provides valuable back support for prolonged use. A backless bar stool is more compact and easier to slide under the counter, making it better suited to small spaces or islands where you sit for short periods.

For even greater comfort, some models such as the Basile or Harold bar chairs are fitted with armrests. If several people of different heights use the same island, adjustable bar stools make it possible to set the seat height for each person.

What bar stool height should you choose?

The height of a bar stool should be chosen according to where it will be used. For comfortable seating, allow a gap of 25 to 30 cm between the seat of your stool and the surface beneath which it will be placed.

To choose the right bar stool height, here are the essential guidelines:

• For a kitchen island, bar or table measuring 90 cm: choose a seat height of 62 to 65 cm, available in our range of chairs and stools for kitchen islands.
• For a bar counter, table or kitchen island measuring 1 metre: choose a seat height of 71 to 75 cm.
• For a 110 cm high bar: allow for a seat height of 80 to 85 cm, such as our bar stools with an 80 cm seat height.
